Friends of Roxborough State Park

From the desk of Mike Thomas

The Friends of Roxborough State Park is grateful to the Colorado Parks Foundation for their generous support of our mission to partner with the park to educate the public in the natural environment of the park and how to protect these unique natural and cultural resources, and to enhance the visitor experience while at the park. The CPF has financially assisted in several projects dating back to 2010.

Over the years, CPF has supported the following projects:

-Acquisition of our “Rox Ride”, the electric cart that allows us to show the park to people who have mobility difficulties, and members of wedding parties who use our overlooks for spectacular wedding backdrops.
-Interpretive signage for the park’s Gold Standard Leave No Trace program that educates people in ethical outdoor recreation.

-Interpretive signage for the “Persse Place”, the historic home of Henry Persse who gave the area the name Roxborough. The home is opened to the public every Saturday from May through October, when naturalists educate the public on the history of the area and how that history still influences us today.

-A new geology exhibit in the park’s visitor center. The unique geology of Roxborough is what allows us to be considered a National Natural Landmark and a designated Colorado Natural Area. The exhibit educates people on how geologic forces give us the beautiful formations seen throughout the park.

-In 2025, as part of the collaborative efforts between the Friends of Roxborough State Park and CPF, we celebrated our 50th and 40th Anniversaries, respectively, with educational events throughout the summer culminating in the dedication of the park’s new Education Pavilion which has been in the works since 2013. Financial support from CPF put us over the top to finally make this project become a reality. It will allow us to better host the numerous school groups that visit Roxborough each year as key parts of the curriculum.

The CPF has always been supportive of Roxborough’s strategic needs and partners collaboratively with us to provide the excellent educational programming that our visitors enjoy every day. We look forward to continuing this partnership in the years to come.

Sincere thanks to the Colorado Parks Foundation for helping Roxborough State Park be the crown jewel of the Colorado State Park system that it is.
